Rosie Thurston
Director
Rosie Thurston brings 18 years of experience in the community and nonprofit sector in Milton Keynes to her role as Director of The Swans Foundation.
She began her career as the Arts & Culture Project Officer at Make a Difference CIC, where she played a pivotal role in the regeneration of the Milton Keynes bus station, contributing to the establishment of a successful social enterprise.
Throughout her career, Rosie has managed and delivered a range of arts and music projects aimed at young people across Milton Keynes. From managing volunteers at MK Bowl to starting an under 18’s open mic night, a young mums art group & running national Skateboard competitions. These projects were designed to provide those that need it most with a safe space to explore their interests, build friendships, and develop essential skills and experiences to support their future pathways.
Rosie has worked in close collaboration with local schools, youth offending services, and community groups to enhance sports, arts, and heritage services, making a positive impact on over 3,000 young people during her first five years at Make a Difference CIC. She was also a key driver in the development of a youth and community hub in Central Milton Keynes, which featured a recording studio, dance studio, café, radio station, and hosted regular community events.
Through these initiatives, Rosie focused on up-skilling disadvantaged people, empowering them to secure volunteer roles that promoted a sense of ownership and contributed to the sustainability of the projects. In recognition of her and her team's outstanding community contributions, Rosie & her team were awarded the Big Society Award by the Prime Minister in 2010.
Rosie currently leads her own alternative provision in Milton Keynes, which has thrived over the past 10 years, driven by strong, positive relationships with a wide range of community stakeholders, including schools, local councils, youth workers, and community leaders. With 18 years of experience in the nonprofit and education sectors, Rosie has built lasting partnerships with key individuals at the heart of Milton Keynes’ communities, enabling her to deliver impactful and sustainable outcomes.
